Bold steps and gentle footprints

2001: The birth of Chillaz

The brand was launched in Tyrol in 2001 by Ulf Kattnig and Florian Proxauf. Ulf had previously worked for a large textile manufacturer in Hong Kong and noticed that many established brands were unwilling to cater to the needs of the climbing community – especially when it came to stretchy, movement-friendly clothing. This realisation led to the idea of founding their own brand that offered precisely this flexibility. In the first year, 40 retailers were won over by the new vision, which was quite unusual at the time.

2003: Sandra joins the company

In 2003, Sandra Kattnig (then still Emmer) joined the brand. In the same year, Florian Proxauf left to concentrate on his law studies. Sandra and Ulf continued to build the brand together. Sandra, herself a passionate climber, took part in competitions and offered climbing in school sports, ran a small mountain sports shop and gave climbing courses. Love eventually brought her to Ulf in Tyrol.

Today: A family business

Daughter Jeanie later joined the company as well and is now passionately involved in marketing. Over time, this has resulted in a true family business based on the passion and commitment of the entire family and team.

The meaning of the name

“Chill”

Stands for the relaxed atmosphere and authentic lifestyle that the brand embodies.

“Zillertal”

A world-renowned destination for climbing enthusiasts that represents the roots of the brand.

Fusion “Chillaz”

The combination of “chill” and “Zillertal” symbolises the connection between relaxation and adventure in climbing. This is how the name “Chillaz” came about.

Values that connect

Sustainability has always been an important issue for Sandra and Ulf – even at a time when hardly anyone was talking about it. From the very beginning, the two wanted to ensure that production was in harmony with nature and people. Due to the small size of the company, the entire team is so close to the product and the producers that they can check for themselves at any time whether everything meets the high standards. It often seems strange when people ask us whether we treat people, animals and nature well – for us, it goes without saying. Everyone in the team has family and friends and wants the same fair conditions for everyone involved as they expect for themselves.

Over time, a true family business has developed, based on the passion and commitment of the entire family.

Ulf was a professional cross-country skier for many years and later also a mountain biker before discovering climbing. From the very beginning, Ulf and Sandra designed the collections for women, men, children and accessories together. In the early years, the two did everything themselves – from design to packaging and shipping – and therefore know every job in the company first-hand. To this day, Ulf’s focus remains on designing the collection, sales and, above all, production, while Sandra takes care of the collection, marketing and IT matters.

Ulf lived in Hong Kong for several years, where he worked for a large textile manufacturer and expanded his knowledge of the industry. The work there was tough but instructive, preparing him for the later establishment of the brand.

The support of family and friends played a major role, especially when Sandra and Ulf came together both professionally and privately in 2003. Their shared passion for sport and their vision of creating innovative climbing clothing brought them together.

An important part of the success is the dedicated team that has been built up over the years. Without the strong team working behind the scenes every day, the brand’s growth on this scale would not have been possible. The team brings a wide range of skills and a great deal of passion to realise the founders’ vision. Every single employee contributes to making the brand what it is today: a joint project of people who love climbing and nature.
